Raksasa internet Google pun membuka harga pada kisaran USD 900 juta (Rp 7,9 triliun). Namun, Google tak akan bisa semudah itu membeli aset Nortel.
Seperti dikutip dari Reuters, aset paten Nortel juga diminati banyak pihak. Termasuk di antaranya adalah ZTE, Ericsson dan RPX.
Google diduga kuat melakukan penawaran ini untuk memperkuat amunisinya dalam perang melawan berbagai pesaing. Terutama dengan makin populernya platform Android.
"Google adalah perusahaan yang relatif muda, dan meski kami punya banyak paten, banyak pesaing kami yang memiliki portofolio lebih besar mengingat sejarah mereka yang lebih panjang," tutur Kent Walker, pengacara Google, dalam blog resmi Google.
Nortel mengajukan bangkrut pada Januari 2009. Salah satu pelopor di teknologi jaringan (nirkabel dan kabel) itu diperkirakan memiliki sekitar 6.000 paten dan aplikasinya.
'Harta karun' Nortel ini disebut memiliki aplikasi luas, yang mencakup teknologi nirkabel, data, jejaring optik, suara, internet, semikonduktor dan lainnya.
Harga yang ditawarkan Google akan menjadi nilai minimum dalam lelang yang digelar Nortel. Belum jelas seperti apa mekanisme lelang Nortel nantinya. Diperkirakan, lelang itu akan digelar pada Juni 2011.
