Gempa berkekuatan 8,9 skala Richter yang mengguncang Jepang telah menggeser Pulau Honshu sejauh delapan kaki atau sekitar 2,4 meter dari posisinya semula. Demikian disampaikan US Geological Survey (USGS)."Itu adalah angka yang masuk akal," ujar ahli seismologi dari USGS, Paul Earle. Dikatakan Earle, pergeseran juga seharusnya terjadi di pulau-pulau di Indonesia dan Cile yang terkena imbas tsunami Jepang.
Lazimnya, lempengan Pasifik bergeser sekitar 83 milimeter setiap tahunnya. Namun, gempa besar dapat menggeser lempengan Pasifik secara drastis, yang disusul dengan konsekuensi katastropik.
Gempa bumi yang diikuti tsunami telah memorak-porandakan kota-kota yang berada di wilayah timur laut Jepang. Perdana Menteri Naoto Kan mengatakan, gempa kali ini merupakan bencana nasional yang belum pernah terjadi sebelumnya.
Gempa juga menyebabkan kebocoran pada bangunan Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Nuklir (PLTN) Fukushima Daiichi yang dioperasikan Tokyo Electric Power Co atau Tepco, Sabtu. Hingga kini, warga yang berada pada radius 20 kilometer telah diungsikan.
